Our school is small, with a total enrollment of approximately 400 students. About 80 of the 400 are high school students. Because we are such a small school, money for the sports program is extremely limited. Our Varsity Basketball team, the Woodstream Bucks, desperately needs money for new uniforms and to pay for the rental of a gym that would allow us to have more flexibility in when and where we practice. Due to very limited resources, we practice at the Bowie City Gym where we are always competing for time and space. Our girls and boys varsity basketball teams practice on the same court at the same time. Many times there are members of the gym working out at the same time that we are trying to prepare for our basketball games. This $2500 grant would enable us to rent space for the boys and the girls to practice separately, on a court that would provide greater flexibility, and it would allow us to rent space more frequently. I think this would allow for more time to practice and would result in more team bonding, greater school spirit and additional students trying out for the basketball team. Our varsity basketball team consists of 10 boys. The number would be greater if we had more consistently in the time and place of practice.
We heard about the Gear Up for the Grants Contest from a family friend. She emailed us the link to the Contest.
Our team, the Woodstream Bucks, deserves to win because we work very hard in spite of the limitations that we face due to lack of resources. We are a good team with NO money. We want to be a superior team. Additional resources would help us to look more professional, attract better players to the program and would help us to be a superior team as a result of more time to practice. We seem to get the leftovers of space and time.
One member of our team, Ryan, wears glasses and four other members, Myles, Marcellus, Arthur and Gabe wear contact lenses.
